Type 1 vs. Type 2 Diabetes: Understanding the Core Differences
A breakdown of the two major forms of diabetes
When someone says they have "diabetes," it is crucial to understand which type they are referring to. Type 1 and Type 2 are fundamentally different conditions that share a common symptom: high blood sugar.
Type 1 Diabetes (Autoimmune)
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. The body produces zero insulin. It is usually diagnosed in children and young adults.
- Cause: Genetic and autoimmune factors. Not caused by diet or lifestyle.
- Treatment: Lifelong insulin therapy is mandatory for survival. Pills do not work.
Type 2 Diabetes (Metabolic)
Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. The pancreas still produces insulin, but the body's cells become resistant to it (Insulin Resistance). Over time, insulin production declines.
- Cause: A combination of genetics, obesity, physical inactivity, and aging.
- Treatment: Managed initially through diet, exercise, and oral medications. Insulin may be needed in later stages.
