High Uric Acid (Gout) and Metabolic Syndrome
Understanding the painful joint condition linked to diabetes
Gout is an intensely painful form of inflammatory arthritis. It occurs when high levels of uric acid in the blood crystallize and deposit in joints, most famously the joint of the big toe.
The Metabolic Connection
High uric acid (Hyperuricemia) rarely exists in isolation. It is strongly associated with Metabolic Syndrome—a cluster of conditions including central obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and insulin resistance (prediabetes/diabetes). Addressing your uric acid often means addressing your overall metabolic health.
Dietary Management
Uric acid is a breakdown product of purines. To manage it, you must limit high-purine foods:
- Avoid: Organ meats, certain seafood (prawns, crabs), and alcohol (especially beer).
- Limit: Red meat and fructose-sweetened drinks.
- Hydrate: Drinking plenty of water is the most effective way to help your kidneys flush out excess uric acid.
